PBS: Joan McCarter, and Elsie Andrade, Phoenix Bonsai Society Club Mentors, will
be presenting a short workshop from 1:00 until
approximately 4:00 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Valley Garden Center, 1809
North 15th Avenue in Phoenix. This workshop will focus on Bougainvillea but other trees are welcomed as well. At the workshop Joan and Elsie will provide some basic instruction on designing the tree, cutting and wiring, and re potting. Other desert trees are welcomed. This is an acceptable time to re-pot some desert trees. Non desert trees can be worked on but re-poting now would be unwise. So stop by a local nursery and purchase a Bougainvillea or other desert tree and bring it to the workshop. If you have other trees that you would like assistance with feel free to bring them as well. Even if you don't have a tree but would like to observe and ask questions you are encouraged to attend. Joan has indicated that she will have some soil, pots, wire and tools with her for sale on Saturday. You may to bring your own material, soil, pots, wire, tools, etc., to support your workshop activities. The fee for the workshop is $10.00 payable to the Phoenix Bonsai Society. You may make payment at the workshop on August 9th. |

| ? | FRI - SUN PBS: Chinese Week Show/Display at the Chinese Cultural Center, 44th Street just south of the 202 Freeway. This 3-day event is well attended and an excellent opportunity to educate the public about the Art of Bonsai. This event is a great time to bring your Show Quality (trees trimmed, soil cleaned up, pots oiled) Bonsai for display. You can bring your own stand or the Club has many to choose from. This is a great time to volunteer to help set-up, take-down and work the booths at these shows. Spending time in the booths is one of the best educational and learning experiences you can take advantage of and for no cost at all. Talking to the Club Mentors and other Club Members with their years of experience is one of the best ways to advance and enhance your knowledge for the Art of Bonsai. You all have a tree that can be ready for the Show - start working on it and join in the events. |

SAT - SUN PBS: MATSURI, the largest annual show as part of the Japan Festival @ Heritage Square, 6th and Monroe Streets near downtown Phoenix. Free Admission. Nominal fee parking in the parking garage just to the west. Set up under the large Lath House at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday; take down around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Includes at least one demonstration and a raffle of a tree. Again, every Arizona club member is invited to bring a tree or two or three. This 2-day event is a Japanese Celebration and also is well attended and another excellent opportunity to show and talk about the Art of Bonsai. This is another great time to bring your Show Quality (trees trimmed, soil cleaned up, pots oiled) Bonsai for display. You can bring your own stand or the Club has many to choose from. This is also a great time to volunteer to help set-up, take-down and work the booths at these shows. You all have a tree that can be ready for the Show - start working on it and join in the events. You say your trees still aren't ready yet? Repeat after me: "My trees will never look better than when they're on display next to other members' trees." Bring 'em down and hang out with us. (Review our thoughts on displaying.) |
